Do you think that laying down a foundation of traditional Japanese style judo techniques is important in order for the student to understand the derivatives of the throw's variations? Or, is it of more concern to your style to "cut to the chase" and show the most modern variations that have the highest percentage in competition?
I ask because I want my new students to be successful in competition, but I also want them to know the roots of every throw. Should I bother teaching my new students modern competition variations before they have become proficient at the traditional/basic version of the throw (not to imply that traditional is basic).
The Ippon seoi nage is one of my favorite throws and I totally soak up every variation and nuance about it. At the same time I am in a position of teaching Judo to new students.
